Behind the Technicolor Curtain!

Griffin Lewis as Joseph and Mary Evan Giles as The Narrator

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a unique show because its cast contains a narrator - someone who helps navigate the plot with the audience and knows what the eventual outcome of the story while it's happening. This role is played by Mary Evan Giles. As the show progresses, you will see her translate moments for the audience, explain complicated emotions that characters are dealing with, and even break the fourth wall with audience and characters alike. She is simultaneously a part of the story and outside of it.

Mary Evan took some time out of her busy schedule to give us the inside scoop on what it’s like to play such a unique role, discuss her show history at GLT, and get our readers excited for the opening of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!

Q: You have performed in multiple productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - how does this compare to past experiences?

A: This is my 3rd production of Joseph and 2nd time playing the Narrator. However, the first time I played the Narrator, the part was actually split between 3 women. It was cool doing it that way because we were able to take some liberties on harmonies and it was a different way of telling the story, not to mention having less to memorize. But this time I'm having to memorize the entire thing! It's a challenge and I love it! This cast is so phenomenal at what they do and it's just a pleasure to be a part of.

Q: How does this show, and particularly this role, resonate with you?

A: This show is really special to me because it's one of the first musicals I ever did as a child and I got to do it with my brother and both of my parents. Growing up, I was obsessed with the soundtrack because it is so diverse - there is so much music and so many different styles of music that it was always fun and fresh to listen to. I always knew that the Narrator was a role that I wanted to check off of my bucket list one day. As an actor and performer, story telling is what we thrive on, and this character optimizes that to a T! It's so much fun!

Q: You are quite the GLT favorite! What can you tell us about your fond history with GLT and the wide array of roles you have portrayed on this stage?

A: GLT has become a home to me. The people are so wonderful to work with and the passion for what they do is inspiring. I'm always surrounded by support and encouragement, as I have been fortunate enough to play some incredible roles here. I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to perform with this company!

Q: How did you first get involved in the theatre and what has your journey been to Greenville?

A: Theatre has always been a huge part of my life. Both of my parents are choreographers and directors, so my brother and I grew up in the theatre - literally. I remember as a kid always being at a rehearsal for something. Because of this, I have always had a passion. I love being on stage and could not imagine doing anything else. I grew up in Greenwood, SC and studied Theatre and Vocal Performance at Lander University. Towards the end of college, I decided that Greenville was the next move for me to grow and learn and I have loved every minute of it! My first show in Greenville was Heart & Soul at Centre Stage 3 years ago and I have been working in the Upstate ever since. The community here is beautiful.

Q: As we near opening night, what have you enjoyed most about this process?

A: The cast and crew are amazing. Honestly, my favorite part about coming to rehearsals is to see what everyone else brings to the table. I love watching people do what they love!

Q: What can audiences expect when they see this production?

A: This production of Joseph ... is a visual piece of art. The dancing and movement and set and costumes - all of it is going to be incredible to see. And this cast can SING! Just be prepared to have a fun time seeing and hearing this beautiful story!
